Hindus, Does realizing the mistakes and not repeating them, cleanses the karma incurred by those mistakes?

Those whose intellects pursue It (self), whose mind think about It, who undergo discipline for It, and who hold It as their highest object, have their impurities cleansed by knowledge and go whence there is no return.

Gita :5.17

Will such knowledge and practice, cleanse the past, instant or future karma?Hindus, Does realizing the mistakes and not repeating them, cleanses the karma incurred by those mistakes?
Namaste,

Those whose intellects pursue It (self), whose mind think about It, who undergo discipline for It, and who hold It as their highest object, have their impurities cleansed by knowledge and go whence there is no return.

Gita :5.17

means that a person who tends to attain knowledge about the Atma(Self), will indulge in practising only the Dharma and performing good Karma(deeds/actions)all the way.the term ';having their impurities cleansed by knowledge '; means that the person will realize to differentiate between right and wrong while performing present and future Karmas thus increasing the amount of Punya along. meanwhile, the person would attain the Brahma Jnana(knowledge of Brahma/bliss) and will not be affected(being happy or sad) by the result of those Karma(phala) which that person did before realization of Self(Atma). The last stage of this journey is attaining Moksha.

Thus the sloka means that a person realizes about the ultimate truth and strives to achieve that(it means that person will in future do good deeds).it does not mean the previous karma is cleansed. this is explained by Sri Krishna in the Gita when he states that for every Karma(deed), the Karma Phala(result) HAS to be borne by the same Self. This is the basis for rebirth(to reap the result of previous wrongs).

Hope this helps,

Also add one thing also that is repentance.

Scriptures say:-

one who doesn't make a mistake is God.

one who makes a mistake but accept his fault and be pledged not to repeat it is a human being.

one who makes a mistake but don't accept his fault and do it again and again is Rakshasa(satan).
just not repeating your mistakes won't cleanse your bad deeds. its the repentance which matters. if you are seriously repenting over the deed you did, you'll be cleansed. it was once said that the tears of repentance cleans all your mistakes. and of course after that you shouldn't repeat them again.
